Survivors of Stalingrad

In the last months of 1942, only a few yards of bitterly contested ground stood between Hitler and the prize which he valued above all others - Stalingrad. The fighting for Stalingrad was intense, protracted and took place under the worst imaginable conditions, including the iron grip of a Russian Winter. After the battle the wretched survivors of a beaten German army surrendered to the Red Army. They had once been 350,000 strong but only 90,000 of these frost bitten, starving scarecrows remained to make the painful forced march into Russian captivity. In the weeks to come 85,000 of these pathetic prisoners would die from disease, starvation, brutality, neglect and despair. Only 5000 survivors from the doomed 6th Army endured the long years of captivity in slave labor camps and lived to see Germany again. This is their story.

The Political Party

The Political Party

The Political Party was an Irish politically themed chat show, broadcast by TV3. It ran for half an hour on Friday evenings. Up until November 2008, it aired on Sunday evenings at 17:00. Hosted by TV3's political editor, Ursula Halligan, the show had an eccentric approach to guests, and included government ministers, poverty campaigners and maverick business leaders in the same programme. The Political Party was driven by Halligan's quirky style of questioning, which can frequently lead the guests to volunteer information they did not expect to. The programme often generated news stories, as politicians chose it to reveal "exclusives" on air. Billed as "the show the politicians are watching", it developed an audience of politicians, media types and others with an interest in the inside track on Irish politics. The show was dropped by TV3 as part of major cutbacks due to the station's deteriorating financial situation. The station's late night sports show was also axed. Halligan is due to launch her new, as yet unnamed, TV show, which will consist of one-to-one interviews, later this year.

Nova: Great Escape at Dunkirk

As France fell to the German armies in May 1940, 400,000 Allied troops were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk. Their annihilation seemed certain—a disaster that could have led to Britain’s surrender. But then, in a last-minute rescue, Royal Navy ships and a flotilla of tiny civilian boats evacuated hundreds of thousands of soldiers to safety across the Channel—the legendary “miracle of Dunkirk.”
